 IELTS writing task 2: tips, structure and essay types

Introduction:

Writing task 2 accounts for 6 bands. You have to spend approximately 40 minutes on writing task 2. Word limit for writing task 2 ranges between 250-270 words. 
Note: do not exceed the word limit it will leads to 0.5 band deduction. 




Writing task 2 structure:

Introduction:
Paraphrase the statement. Write what statement says

Bodypara-1:
Firts write main idea. Then explain it and give Example

Bodypara-2:
Write the second idea, give proper explanation and example to support the idea. 

conclusion:
In conclusion, write down the conclusion by summarising the main ideas. 


Tips to attempt writing task 2 :

  1. Read the statement twice and carefully
  2. Before start writing, plan the essay in mind. 
  3. First, do not write the  introduction same as statement. Try to rephrase the statement using synonymous. 
  4. Use more and more connectors. 
  5. Try to write 2-3 points in one BP and other 2-3 points in one BP. Do not mix the points
  6. Write positive and negative points in separate BPs. 
  7. Do not contradict your own points. This will leads to deduction of bands
  8. Maintain proper coherence ane Cohesion. Check you write the thing which is asked in the statement. 
  9. Do not go off track while writing essay. For example, statement is about discussing problems and solutions but you are writing about advantages and disadvantages.
  10. Your points should be reasonable
  11. Try to use more uncommon words and synonymous. Do not repeat the words. 
  12. Do not exceed the word limit. 
  13. Recheck the essay after you finished. 
  14. Try to make less grammatical mistakes. 
  15. Do not mix your opinion in first and second BP. Try to write your opinion in In conclusion . 

Writing task 2 essay types:

1.Agree disagree:

In this type of task, you will be given a statement and you will be asked whether you agree the statement or you are against the statement. You are free to favour or diverge the statement. Just give your true opinion. Also, give reasonable points to support or clash the statement. 

You will get Statements like:
  1. People think that the government should pay the tuition fees for all adults who interested in university studies. Do you agree or disagree? 
  2. When a country develops it's technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? 
  3. It is often said that people over the age of 60 should not work anymore because of the problems they create, that employers should make them retire. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your opinion. 

2.Problem and solution

In this type of task, you have to discuss about the problems caused by factors (given in statement) and you have to give appropriate solutions to solve the problems. Give strong points to support your answer. 

Statements:
  1. We are becoming increasingly dependent on computer technology. It is used in business, crime detection and even to fly planes. What will it be used for in future? Is this dependence on technology a good thing or should we be suspicious of its benefits? 
  2. Newspapers and books are outdated. Why do some people believe this? What is your opinion? 
  3. Drugs are becoming more and more common in many countries. What are some of the problems associated with drug abuse, and what are some of the possible solutions

3.Discuss both views

In some essays, you have to discuss about both point of views. You have to write about both positive and negative aspects. Write reasonable points to support your answer. 

Statements:
  1. Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students. discuss both the views. 
  2. In many parts of the world there is continuous coverage of sport on television. Some people believe this discourages the young from taking part in any sort themselves. Discuss this view and give your own opinion. 
  3. Some people believe that money is everything in today's life, however some says it's not. Discuss both and give your opinion. 

4. Merits and demerits:

This type of essays are easier ones. You just have to write advantages and disadvantages. Simply, write positive points in first BP and flaws in second BP. 

Statement types:
  1. The costs of international travel are decreasing and tourism is growing. What are the adventages and disadvantages of increasing tourism activity in different countries? 
  2. In some countries, it is common for women to find a job when their children are young. What are the adventages and disadvantages of this? 
  3. What are the adventages and disadvantages of computer game fir children?
